Walk description:

The Country Park is acessed via Smithills Dean Road, which is to the north of the Bolton Town Centre, just off the A58 ring road. Within the park there are many stone surfaced paths which lead around Smithills Hall. Parking is available at the Open Farm.

Additional notes:

The paths are generally either sandstone or tarmac surfaced. They are accessible for pushchairs, although there may the odd steep incline. Parking is available at the Open Farm, where we have just installed a new disabled access path which leads in the loop shown on the map, via the old garden nursery and Hall. The Open Farm has a wide variety of animal life and is a popular destination for school parties. Very close to the farm is Smithills Hall itself, which dates back to the 15th century, it is surrounded by a large network of public footpaths and restricted byways, set within 2,000 acres of woodland, farmland and moorland. The Smithills estate extends onto a wider area of access land which extends to the north into Chorley and Blackburn, and as such is a major recreational resource for the north west. Whilst visiting Smithills you may also be interested in visiting Horrocks Wood, which is also listed on this website. It is just over a mile away and is found by driving to the top of Smithills Dean Road and turning right onto Scout Road, the car park is 500 metres on the left.
